Winter Hair Care in New England: How to Fight Dryness, Static and Frizz

New England winters are hard on hair. Cold, dry air outside and forced heat inside can both pull moisture out of your strands, which often leads to static, frizz, breakage and dull color. A few changes to your routine can make a noticeable difference between now and spring.

Why hair gets so dry in winter

Cold air holds less moisture, and indoor heating dries it out further. Your hair loses water to that dry air, and the outer layer of each strand can become rougher. That's when hair starts to feel brittle, look dull and cling to your sweater.

Adjust your wash routine

  • Turn down the water. Very hot showers can strip natural oils, so lukewarm water is the better choice.

  • Wash less often if you can. Spacing out washes gives your natural oils more time to work through your hair.

  • Add a weekly mask. A deep conditioning treatment helps restore softness, especially on colored or lightened hair.

How to stop static

  • Use a leave-in conditioner or a small amount of hair oil on your ends.

  • Choose a wooden or anti-static comb or brush.

  • Run a humidifier at home to add moisture back to the air.

  • Pick silk or satin-lined hats and scarves when you can, since rough wool can add friction.

Protect your hair from heat and cold

  • Use heat protectant every time. Winter hair is already dry, so don't skip it before using a dryer or hot tools.

  • Lower your iron temperature. Use the lowest setting that still gets the job done.

  • Dry your hair before going out. Damp hair is more fragile, and it's worth letting it dry fully before stepping into freezing air.

Keep your color and ends looking healthy

Dry winter hair can make color look flat, and split ends can travel further up the strand if they're left alone. A regular trim helps keep ends neat, and a gloss between color appointments can bring back shine. If you've colored or lightened your hair, ask your stylist which at-home products make the most sense for you.
