Curtain Bangs, Birkin Bangs or Eyelid-Grazing Bangs: Which Fringe Is Right for You?

Bangs are one of the quickest ways to change your look without losing length, and 2026 has made them much less of a commitment. Three styles are getting the most attention right now. Here's how they differ and how to decide which one fits your hair and routine.

Curtain bangs

Curtain bangs are longer, usually parted in the middle, and blend into the rest of your haircut. They can look retro and '70s-inspired or polished and modern, depending on how you style them. They're also the most forgiving choice, since they grow out easily and can be tucked behind your ears.

Birkin bangs

Named for Jane Birkin, this fringe sits between blunt and wispy, with a slightly square shape that looks best with tousled hair. It feels more deliberate than curtain bangs, so it's a good pick if you want a noticeable change. Expect to trim it fairly often to keep it out of your eyes.

Eyelid-grazing bangs

This light fringe falls right around the eyelids and can be worn forward or tucked into a style. Because it's soft and low-commitment, it's a good way to try bangs if you've never had them.

How to choose

  • Round faces: Longer, face-framing curtain bangs can add length and shape.

  • Long or oval faces: A fuller Birkin fringe can help balance the proportions.

  • Curly hair: Curly bangs should be cut with your natural texture in mind, because they shrink as they dry.

  • Fine hair: A lighter fringe usually keeps the rest of your hair from losing fullness.

  • Cowlicks: Show your stylist where your hair naturally grows, since a strong cowlick can affect which fringe will lie well.

Everyday bangs care

Bangs pick up oil from your forehead faster than the rest of your hair, so a little dry shampoo goes a long way between washes. Blow dry them first, while they're still damp, because they set quickly. It also helps to plan on regular fringe trims so the shape stays right between full haircuts.
